How NearbyRents works
Rent what you need for a few days instead of buying it. Earn from the things sitting unused in your own home. Here is how both sides of that actually work.
Renting something
1. Set your city
Use the location picker in the header. Everything you browse from then on is filtered to that city — because an outfit two states away is not something you can collect on Friday evening.
2. Find the item
Browse by category or search directly. Listings show the daily rate, the security deposit, the minimum rental period and the owner’s city. Sizes, brands and condition are on each listing under specifications.
3. Message the owner
Every listing has a chat. Agree the dates, the handover point and the deposit before you commit to anything. Keep it in the app — if something goes wrong later, that conversation is the record of what you agreed.
4. Collect, use, return
Meet, check the item over together, pay the rent and the deposit, and take it. Return it on the agreed day in the condition you got it, and your deposit comes back.
Photograph the item at handover, with the owner there. Both of you keep a copy. It takes fifteen seconds and it settles virtually every argument about a scratch that might or might not have already been there.
Earning from what you own
1. Post the listing
Photograph the item in good light against a plain background, and be honest about wear — a listing that undersells a small flaw gets a smooth return, one that hides it gets an argument. There is an optional assistant that will draft the description and suggest a rate from your title and category; everything it fills in is yours to edit before you post.
2. Set your rate and deposit
A common starting point is roughly 3–8% of the item’s replacement value per day, with a deposit that covers what it would cost you to replace it. Look at what similar items in your city are charging.
3. Answer quickly
Most rentals are decided in the first exchange of messages. An owner who replies the same day rents out far more than one who replies in three.
4. Hand over properly
Meet somewhere public. Show the renter how the item works and anything they need to be careful with. Take the deposit before the item leaves your hands, and photograph it together.

Common questions
Does it cost anything to list an item?
No. Listing is free, and there is no fee to browse or to message an owner. You keep what you agree with the person renting from you.
How is the security deposit handled?
The deposit is agreed and exchanged directly between the two of you at handover, along with the rent. NearbyRents does not hold money and does not process card payments, so nothing sits with us in the middle.
What happens if an item comes back damaged?
The deposit exists for exactly this. Photograph the item together at handover and again at return — it settles almost every disagreement in a minute. If you cannot resolve it between you, report the listing and our team will look at the conversation and the photos.
How do I know the other person is genuine?
Every account is tied to a verified email address, and many carry a verification badge and a trust score built from completed rentals and reviews. Read the reviews on a listing, and keep the conversation inside the app so there is a record of what was agreed.
Can I rent something in a different city?
You can browse any city, or All India, using the location picker in the header. But NearbyRents is built for hyperlocal renting: items are handed over in person, so in practice you want something close enough to collect and return.
What can I not list?
Anything illegal to rent or own, anything you do not own or have the right to rent out, counterfeit goods, weapons, and anything requiring a licence you do not hold. Listings can be taken down, and you will be shown the reason.
How do I take my listing down?
Open My Listings and switch the listing off. It stops appearing immediately and nothing is deleted, so you can switch it back on when the item is free again.
